Mead honey calculator
Estimate how much honey to hit a target original gravity for a batch of mead, on the standard 35 PPG honey basis — an estimate, not an official measurement.
The Mead Honey Calculator estimates how much honey to add to hit a target original gravity for a batch of mead. Enter the gravity you're aiming for and your batch volume, and it gives the honey to add on the standard 35 PPG honey basis (points per pound per U.S. gallon).
It's an estimate. Honey's actual gravity contribution varies by varietal — roughly 33–38 PPG — so it's a starting point, not a measurement, and never valid for a tax or label filing. On the hub it sits in the Estimates (non-regulatory) section, and the calculator opens with a Non-regulatory estimate badge and a highlighted note.
It's free, needs no account, and computes in your browser.
Open the calculator
- On the public site: in the top navigation choose Tools, then — in the Estimates (non-regulatory) section — on the Mead Honey card choose Open calculator.
- Inside the app: in the navigation choose Tools, then on the Mead Honey card choose Open calculator.
Find the honey to add
- In Target original gravity, enter the starting gravity you're aiming for, and set its Reading unit to Specific gravity (the default — the mead maker's usual OG unit) or °Brix. A typical mead targets around 1.100. A specific gravity must be between 0.98 and 1.2; a Brix reading between 0 and 40.
- In Batch volume, enter your batch size, and from Unit choose it (Milliliters (mL), Liters (L), U.S. gallons — the default — Wine gallons, Barrels (31 U.S. gal), or Fluid ounces).
- From Show honey in, choose the unit for the result: Pounds (lb) (the default), Grams (g), Ounces (oz), or Kilograms (kg).
- Honey to add, in the unit you chose, appears once the target gravity and volume are valid. A note reminds you the figure is based on honey at 35 PPG and that real honey runs about 33–38 PPG by varietal, so you should top up to your measured gravity.
If the target gravity is at or below 1.000, the calculator tells you no honey is needed — water alone already meets it.
Worked example
A 5 U.S. gallon batch targeting an original gravity of 1.100, showing the honey in pounds:
- Target original gravity:
1.100, Reading unit: Specific gravity - Batch volume:
5, Unit: U.S. gallons - Show honey in: Pounds (lb)
The calculator shows Honey to add 14.29 lb.
When to reach for it
Reach for the Mead Honey Calculator when you're planning a batch and want to know roughly how much honey to buy or weigh out to hit a starting gravity. Because honey varies by varietal, treat the figure as a starting point and confirm against a hydrometer reading as you mix — the note on the calculator says so, and the page-bottom disclaimer confirms it's a reference tool, never a system of record for a filing.
